Colombia's President Says 'I Shall Resort to Weapons Again' should American Forces Intervenes Militarily.

The US President along with his Colombian counterpart have escalated the volume of their exchange, heightening tensions between the two countries following US forces targeted Venezuela in an operation to oust Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He runs narcotics facilities and production sites and that won't last much longer," the US president stated.

Rising Threats coupled with Allegations

Speaking to journalists over the weekend, the US president suggested similar use of force towards the South American nation, stating Colombia faces serious problems and led by a problematic figure who likes making cocaine and trafficking it to the United States."

Although Colombia is the world’s largest cocaine-producing country, authorities have found no indication linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is personally connected to the trade.

A Frayed Relationship

The country has long been a key ally of the United States in the struggle against drug trafficking and benefited from bipartisan support in the US capital, but relations have deteriorated markedly after Trump came to office.

The nation's illicit drug economy is mainly overseen by guerrilla factions like the Clan del Golfo, the ELN guerrilla group and renegade units of the demobilized Farc, the majority of whose members demobilised after a 2016 peace deal.

The President's Firm Rebuttal

When asked if military intervention comparable to Venezuela was being considered against his country, Trump replied: "That seems like a good idea to me personally."

President Petro, once a member of a left-wing insurgent group who demobilised decades ago, categorically refuted the accusations. "I am not illegitimate and certainly not involved in narcotics," he declared.

"He comments uninformed. Stop slandering me," he posted in a message.

"If US bombs target peasants, they will become a multitude of fighters in the mountains. And if they detain the nation's leader, whom a significant portion of Colombians loves and respects, they will release the powerful force of the people," Petro warned.

From Fighter to Statesman

Petro spent part of his youth participating in the left-wing M-19 insurgent movement although reports indicate to have ever engaged in fighting. After demobilizing, he was involved in drafting the constitutional rewrite in 1991 and later became a respected lawmaker. He served as mayor of Bogotá before winning the presidency.

"I pledged to abstain from using arms again ... but for the homeland I will take up weapons once more," he said.

Reinforced Protection and Cross-Political Opposition

Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that Petro's personal security had received additional support.

A segment of Colombia’s conservative opposition have expressed support with Trump, but voices from across Colombian politics have rejected the possibility of American military action on Colombia.

Diplomatic and Financial Sanctions

The US cancelled the president's entry visa following he called on US military personnel to refuse unlawful commands. Later, in October, it placed asset freezes against the president, the first lady and various associates.

At the same time while America bolstered its military presence in the Caribbean and targeting alleged narcotics traffickers to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets also carried out attacks on boats in the eastern Pacific region adjacent to Colombia.
