An individual who laced treats with sedative and provided them to youngsters at a youth camp in the area has admitted sexual offenses against two children aged nine and ten years old.

Jon Ruben was arrested after eight youngsters and one adult experienced illness at the facility in July.

The elderly man, from the Nottinghamshire area, pleaded guilty to a series of 17 offences when he stood at the courthouse on the end of the week.

Nevertheless, he disputed a single sexual charge he was accused of, which was involving a nine-year-old boy.

The accused was held in detention prior to a subsequent court date on late November.

'Sweet game'

The legal representative, presenting evidence, detailed the defendant's actions to the legal proceedings.

She said his targets were children from difficult backgrounds who were participating in a youth camp which he managed.

The defendant played a "sweet game" with the youngsters, Mrs Prior explained, in which he would go into the sleeping quarters when they were preparing to sleep and ask them to eat sweets "as fast as possible".

She stated to the judge the defendant had conducted this practice with the children "repeatedly", and minors had previously become sick the following morning.

She stated the defendant had been able to explain this for many years as the youngsters being "overstimulated by activities", until his stepchild had suspicions in July 2025.

Mrs Prior KC stated further: "Recently" his stepchild had suspicions about the activities, for good reason.

"They resolved" to investigate in the defendant's belongings."

Mrs Prior KC stated materials including lubricant, petroleum jelly and syringes were discovered, and his family member notified the law enforcement about his concerns.

She explained Ruben proceeded to engage in the "candy game" with six children that evening - July 26th - and they were everyone unwell the next day.

"The police had not gone out by that time," she continued.

The regulatory agency, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, previously told that it was investigating Leicestershire Police's handling of the incident.

The prosecutor explained the children were struggling to walk due to being ill, so Ruben's stepson contacted the law enforcement again.

She explained the defendant then engaged in the "sweet game" in a area of five minors.
