Unidentified Rosy Sludge on Remote Tasmanian Beach Raises Anxiety of Likely Algal Bloom
Agencies in the island state are working to identify a pink slime that has appeared on a secluded beach, with a number of researchers concerned it could be an phytoplankton proliferation.
Extensive Appearance Along Coastline
The magenta-hued slime appeared along a stretch of a southern bay about 37 miles south of the capital. A similar sludge has also been documented on parts of another local beach and Little Taylors Bay.
Samples Collected for Analysis
Examples have been taken and provided to the Environment Protection Authority for examination. A representative remarked that "phytoplankton proliferations are a normal phenomenon in reaction to changes in food sources, heat, rain or light".
"They are sometimes called crimson or rosy tides because the blooms can color the water reddish," the spokesperson said. "Few algal blooms are toxic, with many species serving as a major source of nourishment for creatures in the aquatic ecosystem."
"The primary reason of red tides in Tasmanian waters is the oceanic algae Noctiluca scintillans, which can cause luminous nighttime effects at night."

Algal blooms happen naturally but their frequency has grown in recent years, in part due to climate change and pollution that merge to create nutrient-rich waters primed for the quick expansion of dinoflagellates.
